Truxtun, Marie, and the Chinese

I get a lot of visitors to this website from Shanghai, China. I’m sure it has nothing to do with hacking, but rather because Truxtun Beale was fascinated by China. Sure, he lobbied for continuing the Chinese Exclusion Act, but he visited China as a young man and appreciated their culture. From Census records we can see that in 1910, he had a Chinese cook working for him:

As for Marie, she was also fascinated by Chinese people and culture. We know that she was in Shanghai, at least once. This log shows her traveling from the city to Hawaii in 1934. As was so often the case, it appears that she traveled alone:
