Death Valley Days with General Beale (and Truxtun)

Truxtun’s father, General Edward Fitzgerald Beale, was a hero of the old west. His career started out in the Navy, but he ended up as a general in the California Militia.

The 1950s TV show, Death Valley Days, has two episodes that feature Beale. The first, Gold Rush in Reverse, is about him bringing news of gold found in California back to Washington, D.C. It is currently on YouTube and can be seen here:

The second, Camel Train, is about his role in importing camels into the United States. It actually shows a young Truxtun at the end riding a camel. You can watch this at the Internet Archive:

Both are fun shows to watch and are historically accurate. General Beale was very fond of his camels. It was said that he even “taught himself Syrian in order to speak to his camels in their native tongue.” (Thompson, Gerald Eugene. The Public Career of Edward Fitzgerald Beale, 1845 – 1893.
